Our 3 year old.

Things have been so crazy (good-crazy!) around here the past few days that I’m just NOW getting to post something very important.

Our daughter turned 3 years old on Friday!!!!!

Where has the time gone??

From this…

10 days old.

to this.

All in the blink of an eye!

Adelyn has grown into an outgoing, exciting, curious, eager, sweet, thoughtful and completely lovable pre-schooler. She loves to make friends. She loves to learn. She loves to try new things. She’s an outdoor fanatic. We couldn’t ask for a more wonderful daughter. She handled the transition to “big sister”hood very well and genuinely loves Colton. Even though there are times when she can be decidedly challenging, that’s what being a pre-schooler is all about. Her inquisitive nature is something I hope she holds on to for the rest of her life.

We love you beagaloo!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How did our pre-schooler spend her day?
She woke up excited and in a great mood because she knew that today! was! her! birthday!
Party hat!
Her big birthday present from Momma and Daddy was an easel with a chalkboard on one side and a white board on the other. I also sewed a ruffled smock for her to wear when she paints thanks to this tutorial from Make it and Love it. {{Super easy tutorial, and I love how her smock turned out.}}
She jumped up and down when she saw the easel…
and dove right in before breakfast.
Doesn’t she look like a little wizard with her hat and smock??
Finger painting. Colton enjoys the easel too.
She photographed her first easel painting. Lovely work.
After coloring up an appetite, Adelyn enjoyed a birthday pancake shaped like a “3″ (although, I admit, I think it looks more like a fetus than a number three… you can’t “unsee” the fetus now, can you! You’re welcome.).
I promise she enjoyed it!
And after that, it was back to the easel!
Look at that enthusiasm! These kids are into art.
Shortly after lunch, Grandma, Grandpa, and Auntie Kim arrived for the weekend. Lots of spoiling and playing ensued.
Doing some engineering with Grandpa.
She wanted a picture of her clip on earrings.
Also? Apparently my girl is a model. Does this, or does this not, look like an actress’ headshot?!?!
I We had our hearts set on Thai food for dinner (that’s all I wanted for my birthday – which happens to be the day before Addy’s!), but alas, they were closed for a graduation. ::grumble, grumble:: But we enjoyed a delicious dinner of bbq instead!
Colton sure enjoyed it.
Next came cupcakes and presents.
Showing off all her beautiful jewelry from Great Grandma Archer.
The last present she opened was a big surprise out in the garage. With some help from Auntie Kim, Addy unveiled…
A kitchen! A kitchen that actually has running water!!
My parents built this little kitchen themselves. Let’s take a moment to admire it! There is a pump rigged up under the counter so when Addy pushes and pulls the little black lever just to the right of the faucet, water comes pouring out! And the other neat thing? The sink drains. Addy can pop up the center of the drain and the water flows out the back. How genius is that?! My Mom did an awesome job making the stained glass window. {{Side note: Mom has her own Etsy shop where she sells some of the stained glass lanterns, lamps, night lights, and candle accessories that she makes by hand. Seriously, she is amazing. Some of my favorites include this, this and this. Check it out: Ethereal Elegance}}
My Dad with the kitchen just after they finished it.
The kitchen is seriously awesome. Addy’s has been playing with it non-stop.
Like a little housewife, doing the dishes while wearing her pearls.
That about wraps up Adelyn’s birthday day! Next up is her birthday fiesta, so stay tunnnnned…
Adelyn is 3 years, 5 days old, and Colton is 11 months, 2 weeks old.
The big 2-9.
It was Derek’s 29th birthday yesterday!
Wouldn’t it be great if the birthday boy (or girl) could take the day off work on their birthday? That would be fun. :) But alas, Derek had to work yesterday so the kids and I spent the day cleaning, making cupcakes and wrapping a few little gifts!
While Colton was busy helping me sweep the floor with his belly… {{oh ya, he’s army crawling now! Post to come.}}
Addy helped me bake cupcakes and whip up some icing.
{{Colton said “Can I try some icing too?”}}
Ta-Da! Playing around with new icing techniques.
Believe it or not, Addy took these next two pics while I iced the rest of the cupcakes:
Yum yum.
Of course, we had to sample one to make sure they were edible for Daddy.
Next, we wrapped the Daddy’s presents. When I asked Adelyn what she wanted to give Daddy for his birthday, she thought for a second and then said “Candles!”. So, we went shopping and she picked out these two candles all by herself. Isn’t she thoughtful?? {{Side note: Momma made sure they smelled good before we made the purchase because some candles? They are stinky.}}
{{Colton tried to get in on the wrapping and help out too.}}
Daddy did manage to come home an hour early, so when we heard the garage door opening, Addy hid under the table so she could jump out and yell “Suprise!”.
As to be expected, Addy helped Daddy open his presents…
And both kids helped him blow out his cupcake birthday candle.
Happy birthday to the best hubby (and Daddy) anyone could ask for!! We love you! :)
Adelyn is 2 years, 10 months old and Colton is 9 months, 1.5 weeks old.
Adelyn’s 2nd birthday
Hey, didya hear?
Our daughter turned TWO!!!! I can hardly believe it. But then I realize, “well, we are about to have a second child” and maybe I can believe it. She is turning into such a big girl.
So, let me tell you about her birthday party! Her theme? This didn’t take too much thought. Addy loves the movie Finding Nemo. Loooooves it. And because Addy was born at the end of May when temperatures are a million degrees, we have to have water present at her party, right? So an Under The Sea theme was perfect. I did some research, started planning early, and with {a ton} of help from my family, I’d say the party went off without a hitch!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

To begin, I want to show y’all some of the decor:

I made this life preserver to welcome our guests when they first arrived at our house. Super easy to make! I used a styrofoam ring (Hobby Lobby), took my trusty hot glue gun and glued red and white felt around the ring. I found some white cord and twisted it to act as the accent rope, and then used black puff paint to write out our name. Voila! Life preserver for an underwater party!

Part of the indoor decor, inspired by this cute birthday party. Again, easy to do – blue tulle (Hobby Lobby), a couple different shades of blue balloons (local dollar store), blue table cloth (dollar store), colorful fish (Oriental Trading Co.), inflatable octopus (Hobby Lobby) and a few handmade starfish (thanks Mikaela!)

Part of the outside seating area. More blue tulle (Hobby Lobby), fishing nets (Oriental Trading Co.), wooden turtle bowl (already owned), large clam shells (already owned) and small shells collected from the beach during our trip to Florida!

Goodie bags! I decorated the little blue totes bags (Target, 3/$1) using felt and iron-on adhesive. I designed with the little underwater critters myself, and had fun doing it! My favorite is the whale :) Filled with Goldfish, underwater shaped fruit snacks, fishy bubbles, and fishy squirt toy.

We also had a bubble machine at the party (best $8 I’ve spent in a long time!), two inflatable pools and a sprinkler ring. Oh yes, and a gigantic whale that my Dad inflated with his very own lungs. Seriously. It was gigantic. Right Dad?

And although this may not interest anyone, I’d like to remember it: Menu included grilled hamburgers and hot dogs, chips and salsa, tortellini pasta salad, fruit salad, and of course, CAKE!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And now, the rest of the pics from the day: preparation thru party!
My family arrived several hours before the party to help me finish up with the decorating and food prep (you know, since I was 36 weeks pregnant and all…). Thank goodness for their help! Poor Derek was already running around doing last minute things, so it was great to have the 8 extra hands to help out.
Mikaela was in charge of the fruit salad.
Mom was busy working on decorating Addy’s underwater cake.
Poor Dad was tasked with blowing up the ginormous whale. (You will be happy to know, Dad, that the whale is still inflated!)
Kim was at my beck and call in terms of decorating (so was Mikaela after she was through with the fruit salad). “I think that fish needs to go over there. A little higher. More balloons. Hmm, maybe try putting another tack over there?” Way to go, sisters.
Ta-ya!
Even the birthday girl got in on the preparation action, helping to fill up the pools.
She’s so excited!!
Fill ‘er up, Daddy.
Addy also had to make sure the lemonade was sweetened and stirred just right.
Auntie Kim giving P-squared a little lovin’.
Let’s get this party started! Addy had a good time splashing in the pools, even though some of the recipients of said splashing may not have enjoyed it as much (sorry Kenna!).
Addy and a beached whale. See?? GIGANTIC!!!!
Our neighbor, Hannah Clare, just enjoying her ring!
Addy’s 2nd cousin, Kenna, playing with the inflatable underwater creatures. I think those were a hit!
Benjy and Addy chasing the bubbles.
Wheeee, whales are fun!
Daddy, the chef. :)
Running through the sprinkler ring with lil’ Matt.
Basically the entire party! A fun group of people :)
Gracie, Addy and lil’ Matt in the “big kid” pool.
My mom, Grandma Lo, with Great-Grandmother and Great-Granddad Dollins.
Thinking about what a fun time she’s having.
Checking out the fishies with Daddy.
Is it time for cake yet?!?!?!
Check out the awesome cake my Mom made! A graham cracker and kitkat pier, swedish fish, gummy sharks, gummy lifesavers, raisinets, …she even used fondant to make Nemo, the jelly fish, starfish, turtle and seagulls! It was awesome :)
Blowing out the candles!
The cake was definitely approved.
The one “mishap” at the party? We forgot to hand out the goodie bags. ::facepalm:: After all that work too. Luckily everyone lived nearby (except little Kenna June, who came all the way from Dallas!) so we were able to hand them out over the next few days. Don’t worry, KJ, we’ve still got your goodie bag!
All in all, I’d say it was a great party and I think everyone had a fun time! Adelyn was given all sorts of neat and wonderful gifts, so she has lots to keep her busy and entertained when P-squared gets here. Thanks everyone for coming and sharing Addy’s special day with us!
I have more pics from the rest of the weekend, but that will be in a separate post. Right now, Momma needs a nap. ;)
Adelyn is 2 years, 3 weeks old and I am 38 weeks, 5 days pregnant.
Florida! Pt. 2
In case you missed it, here’s the link to Florida! Pt 1.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As a quick recap, Days 1 and 2 were mostly spent lounging by the pool, enjoying the outdoors and being chased by Gram Z in the evenings. Good fun!

Day 3
Time for a boat ride on the Zivney’s new boat, Play Hard! This day also happened to be Friday the 13th, and as luck would have it… it was an unlucky day. Addy was not happy to be out on the boat, mostly because she missed her morning swim (that’s sure to make anyone cranky). So she was ultra grouchy and spent almost the entire trip whining, crying and throwing fits, making it hard for any of us to really enjoy the time out there. Then a fresh water hose sprung a leak and dumped a ton of fresh water into the engine room. And then the fuel injector pump on one of the engines broke… tough trip. But at least we got to get out on the water! And we even spotted some dolphins!

Arriving at the Marina.

Addy wanted to check out some of the other boats nearby too.

I would call this one unhappy child.

Trying to make the most of it.

Derek was happy as a clam ! Can you tell that he wants a boat?

Game face on.

Derek and Pops, getting things ready before we head out!

Gram Z and Addy

Studying the water, looking a lil cranky… (not you, Gram Z ;) )

Captain Pops and Co-captain Daddy

Comforting his cranky daughter.

Look, dolphins! We think they were…mating.

Is that… could that be a… a small smile? Of course, this was once we had docked and were getting ready to leave. Oh well, next time will be better!

Day 4
We decided to make a spur of the moment trip to Bathtub Beach, a strip of beach that is sheltered by a live reef. The day we went was pretty windy so there were decent sized waves further off shore, but within the reef area, it was quite nice. This was Adelyn’s first trip to the beach (EVER) and she had a pretty good time!

Checking out the surf and the people in it.

Heading down to the water.

Wave to Daddy!

Momma, Addy and Pops, getting comfortable with the waves.

She liked the feel of the sand.

Daddy and Addy playing.

Lunch time! I see you in there.

Just was we were leaving the beach, clouds started to roll in and we ended up getting a nice rain storm that afternoon (a much needed rainstorm. They are in a drought over there!). After a nice nap, Addy did some major coloring. Well actually, she did major coloring every day. Doesn’t she look like a little school girl??

She works so hard.

Day 5
More swimming in the pool, with the added bonus of an early birthday party for Addy and Momma! Oh, and a very exciting moment… Adelyn caught her first fish! Believe it.

Trying on her new shoes.

She is such a model. We asked her to show us her shoes and she totally worked the runway. We didn’t even tell her to put her hands on her hips, she just started to strut her stuff! :)

Taking Pops for a walk with her new shoes.

Lovely, Adelyn!

Admiring the cake Gram Z and Pops got her.

“One, two, we, go!”

Blow that candle out, girl!

Yayyy!!!!

Feeding herself cake. She’s a big girl now.

Doing some early evening fishing with Daddy.

Helping Daddy with the reel. He would cast out, she would reel the bait in.

Except one time, she actually caught a FISH! Her first one ever! Look at that sucker!!

Hoping to catch another fish.

I’d call this some quality Daddy-Daughter time.

{Days 6 and 7 coming soon!}

Adelyn is 2 years, 1 week old and I am 37 weeks pregnant… but I was only 34 weeks on this trip…

Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day 2009 was spent in the Labor and Delivery suite of the Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, welcoming baby Adelyn to the world.  This past Memorial Day was spent with the same people (my parents and sisters), but in a much more relaxed setting – at my parents home in Austin! Weekend activities included: swimming, celebrating my and Addy’s birthdays, and finally convincing Addy to wear her shoes. She hasn’t taken any steps on her own yet, although she stood by herself for about 10 seconds when Daddy and Grandpa Joe were watching her! Big girl!

Arriving in Austin. Time to stretch the legs!

Early morning with Grandpa

Waving her wand (cat toy)

Love this face! She likes her lunch.

Yummy yummy in her tummy

She sure is a happy girl! She loves sammiches.

1 year letter to Adelyn

Dearest Adelyn,

Today we celebrate the one year anniversary of your birth. 1 year since you changed your Momma and Daddy’s lives forever. 12 months of laughter, tears, frustration, elation. 52 weeks of restless nights and joy-filled days, of doctor’s check ups and milestones. 365 days that have gone by so fast, we fear the next year, 10 years, 50 years, will go by in the blink of an eye.

From the beginning, you were loved. From the moment the word “pregnant” appeared on the pregnancy test (not to mention the two pink lines and the little blue plus sign), we loved you. Through my bouts of morning sickness that lasted all day, we loved you. When you made your Momma get up 4+ times in an hour to use the restroom, we loved you. You were our little “Baby Z”, a mystery, a wonderful blessing and the most exciting adventure either of us was about to embark on. Our love for you grew every day, just as you grew from the size of a little poppy seed to a full blown watermelon!

We told your grandparents the exciting news that we were expecting a little baby over Thanksgiving 2008. Your Daddy and I framed two copies of your ultrasound picture, mailed one frame to Gram Z and Pops in Virginia, and took the other frame to Grandma Lo and Grandpa Joe in Austin. We got to see Grandma Lo and Grandpa Joe’s reactions in person, and it was exactly what we hoped for – thrilled squeals of happiness from them and your Auntie Kim and Auntie Mikaela. We next called Gram Z and Pops on the phone and told them to open their “Thanksgiving gift”, and we heard the same happy reactions from them and your Auntie Lindsay.

It was exactly what we had wanted to hear.

The pregnancy simultaneously flew by and stood still. We couldn’t wait to find out if you were a boy or a girl (we wanted to be surprised when you were born). We couldn’t wait to hold you, introduce you to everyone, take you on trips… and yet, I wanted to keep you in my tummy where I knew you would be completely safe. And what a big tummy I had by the end…

The day you arrived was intense, emotional and magnificent.

You are your mother’s daughter. You looked almost exactly like me when you were born. Same little nose, same little chin, same dark hair. You and I have bonded in ways that only a Momma and her baby can bond. You poked me and nudged me from the inside for months, and I loved it. When I nurse you, you run your little hand back and forth, back and forth, along my collar bone, as if to say “I love you, Momma”. And I reply by stroking your hair, “I love you, Baby”.

Your Momma, circa 1985

Baby Adelyn, 2009

You are your father’s daughter. You are easy going and good-natured. You go with the flow, even when it means falling asleep in crowded, noisy places like your Aunt Kim’s graduation or a family reunion.  You love being outside, enjoying beautiful weather.  Working with Daddy on his oil leases makes you smile.  You can watch your “horsey’s” go up and down all day long and not get bored. You like to go fast in your little red car, and you are a little daredevil who enjoys being swung around and tipped upside down. You are a cheese and avocado aficionado, just like Daddy. And your eyes.  Ohhh, your eyes.  You get compliments from everyone about your gorgeous blue eyes.  And yes, they are most definitely your Daddy’s.

The day you outgrew your first newborn outfits was a shock. The idea that you wouldn’t stay our wee little baby nearly broke my heart. I love that you are so utterly dependent on your Daddy and me because before long, I know you will be struggling to get down from our hugs, to let go of our hands to go play, to take the car so you can go shopping (::gulp::). So until then we hold you, kiss you, snuggle you, trying to soak you in until we’re overflowing with baby love.

You are our little angel, and we’re so blessed to have such a sweet girl. We love you baby. Happy 1st birthday!

Love Momma and Daddy

Addy’s 1st birthday party!

Yesterday we had a little party for Addy’s 1st birthday!

The weather was perfect, so we filled up her kiddie pool, grilled some hamburgers, and had some birthday cake. We invited two couples over, the Spencers (and their sons Caden, ~2 yrs old, and Tate, 1.5 wks old) and the Smiths (and their daughter Hannah Clare, 3 wks old). Baby Tate stayed home with his grandmother, giving the Spencers a chance for a quick outing with Caden.

Addy and Caden had a great time playing with the little red sports car and tossing balloons around. Miss Hannah Clare was a bit too young to partake, but she did get some quality nap-time in! :) Addy and Caden also spent some time in the pool, where Addy learned to copy Caden’s trick – drinking the pool water. No joke, after watching Caden repeatedly dip his face into the water and drink, Addy dunked her face in too. Of course, she hasn’t learned that you don’t inhale the water so she came up a little water logged, but quickly went back for more. Monkey see, monkey do, right?

Sadly, the Spencers had to go home to feed Tate before we had grilled the burgers or eaten the cake, so Caden missed out on that. But the Smiths got to stay and watch Addy (read: Daddy) blow out the candle on her birthday cake and then stick her finger into the frosting to do a quick taste test. Of course, she had to verify her findings that the frosting tasted ok, so she put her finger back in 3 or 4 times.

We served her that portion of the cake.

Butterfly decorations

Addy’s new wheels

Addy opened a biiiiggg birthday gift from her Grandma Lo and Grandpa Joe today! Her very first car!!!

(I can hear it now…Wait, what?! Addy got her first car and she’s not even 1? Jealous!!)

It took some unpacking and unwrapping…

…some reading of the instructions, hammering, and screwing screws…

But we finally got it set up!

Yup, looks good to me Momma.

Now it’s time to take it for a test drive!!

Making the necessary preparations before her first car ride.

Taking her car for a test drive! We’ve got a squeaky wheel…time for some WD-40!

She’s a speed demon! Watch out world, here comes Addy!

She’s an expert driver already :)
